The flange facing decides it first: a ring-type-joint groove takes an RTJ ring and nothing else, a raised face takes a spiral-wound, kammprofile or sheet gasket depending on pressure class, and a flat face takes a full-face sheet gasket. Pressure class then decides whether a soft gasket is viable at all — Class 150 utilities can use compressed sheet, while Class 300 and above on hydrocarbon service needs a semi-metallic or metallic gasket. Temperature and media then set the filler material.
